Box Score
RICHMOND, Va. – A header from freshman Karin Tertseeg (Diepenveen, Netherlands) in the 72nd minute gave the Rams their only goal as the VCU women’s soccer team tied Towson 1-1 in CAA action on Sunday afternoon.
The tie gives the Rams an 11-4-3 mark overall and a 7-2-1 record in the CAA, while the Tigers improve to 5-10-2 overall and 1-8-1 in the conference.
Towson, who hadn’t scored a goal since September 29 when they defeated Georgia State 1-0, came out aggressive as they constantly put pressure on the Rams throughout the first half. The Black and Gold were able to defend the Tigers’ aggressive play in the first half as the two teams went to the intermission with a 0-0 tie.
Out of the break, the Tigers had numerous chances and finally were able to capatalize as Rosie Goldberg took a pass from Phyllicia Rosselli, who had drawn Rams goaltender Lauren Hardison (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) away from the net, and Goldberg found the back of the net to give Towson the 1-0 advantage.
The Rams battled back as they had scoring chances but were unable to get on the scoreboard until sophomore Pernilla Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden) sent a beautiful corner kick into Tersteeg, who evened the score at 1-1.
Senior Jackie Picard (Lorton, Va./Hayfield) made the save of the day as Erica Marshall had a golden opportunity on a breakaway in the 86th minute, but Picard came out to make a stellar play and give the Rams a chance in overtime.
The Black and Gold would battle as they had four shots in the first overtime and three in the second but Brandi Daniels was stellar in net for the Tigers as she recorded 12 saves on the day.
The tie now leaves VCU with a one-point advantage heading into the regular season finale. With a win at James Madison next Friday, the Rams would clinch the second seed in the CAA and a first-round bye in the conference tournament. With a Rams tie at James Madison, UNC Wilmington and Old Dominion must both lose or tie in order for VCU to be the second seed.
The Rams travel to Harrisonburg to take on the Dukes of James Madison on Friday, October 29 in a 7 p.m. contest.
