RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman Emily Jukich fired a loose ball past the goalkeeper in the 71st minute to give Virginia Tech a 1-0 victory over Virginia Commonwealth University in a women’s soccer exhibition match Saturday evening at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.

The Rams held a 13-11 advantage in shots, including 7-2 in the first half, but could not find the back of the net. Each team had four shots on goal.

Senior Leigh Anthony (Fredericksburg, Va.) (pictured) and sophomore Pernilla Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden) each had three shots for the Rams.

Jukich had two shots for Virginia Tech, both of which were on goal. Junior Mary Elizabeth Newton paced the Hokies with five shots, including two on goal.

Junior keeper Lauren Hardison (Midlothian, Va.) had two saves in the first half for the Rams. Junior Emily Niman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had one save for VCU in the second half.

Senior Mallory Soldner and sophomore Ashley Owens each recorded two saves in 45 minutes for the Hokies.

The Rams open the 2006 season next weekend in Florida Atlantic’s tournament. VCU faces Stetson on Friday, Aug. 25, at 5 p.m. The Rams meet the host Owls on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 2:30 p.m.
