BOCA RATON, Fla. – Freshman Amanda Adams (Salem, Va.) tallied the game-winner in the 69th minute as Virginia Commonwealth University claimed a 3-1 victory over Stetson in the first round of the FAU Kickoff Classic in the season-opener for both teams.
The teams played 27 minutes on Friday evening, but the match was halted due to lightning in the area. A full 90-minute contest was played Saturday morning.
The Hatters (0-1-0) got on the board first as Kelsey Kramer converted a header off a corner kick in the 33rd minute to put Stetson on top 1-0. Sophomore Megan Flanagan (Franktown, Colo.) had the equalizer in the 42nd minute for the Rams (1-0-0) as the teams were knotted 1-1 at halftime.
Adams connected off a corner in the 69th minute to give the Rams the lead for good. Sophomore Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) assisted on the goal.
VCU added an insurance goal in the 77th minute as junior Hayley Moorwood (Auckland, New Zealand) tapped in a cross from junior Laure Dupont (Plessis Robinson, France) to put the Rams ahead 3-1.
VCU held a 13-3 advantage in shots, including 8-2 for shots on goal.
Junior Lauren Hardison (Midlothian, Va.) earned the win in the nets for the Rams, recording one save. April Eilering had five saves for the Hatters.
VCU will face host Florida Atlantic on Sunday, August 27, at 2:30 p.m.
