RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Hayley Moorwood (Auckland, New Zealand) and sophomore Francesca Gioeli (New York, N.Y.) (pictured) each scored first-half goals as Virginia Commonwealth University defeated La Salle 2-0 in the second round of the VCU/Ewing Sports Invitational at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium. In the day’s first match, No. 25 William & Mary got a goal in each half to hand Colgate its first loss of the season, 2-0.
Moorwood took a pass from sophomore Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) and fired a shot from 15 yards out inside the right post to give the Rams (3-2-1) a 1-0 advantage in the 19th minute. It was the team-leading third goal for Moorwood. Gioeli added an insurance goal in the 33rd minute as she finished from 15 yards away to give VCU a 2-0 edge. Freshman Donna Morwarin (Deventer, Netherlands) earned the assist.
Junior Lauren Hardison (Midlothian, Va.) recorded four saves for the Rams in registering her second shutout in the past three matches. Sophomore Lauren Malizia had 11 saves in her hometown for the Explorers (1-5-0).
Freshman Sarah Quinlan got the Tribe (5-1-0) on the board in the 42nd minute as W&M held a 1-0 lead at the half. Junior Donna Mataya doubled the lead, heading in a corner kick in the 55th minute to give the Tribe a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Meghan Walker had five saves for the Tribe in recording her third shutout. Junior Carly Sousa had eight saves for the Raiders (4-1-0).
Danielle Collins (W&M) was the tourney MVP. Members of the All-Tournament Team include Walker (W&M), Anna Young (W&M), Katie Hogwood (W&M), Brittany Pearsall (CU), Franny Iacuzzi (CU), Jackie Burch (CU), Hardison (VCU), Gioeli (VCU), sophomore Pernilla Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden) (VCU), Shelby Reese (LU) and Jenna Guagenti (LU).
The Rams will be in Williamsburg next weekend for William & Mary’s Tournament. VCU will face Princeton on Friday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. The Rams will meet N.C. State on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 3 p.m.
