RAMS BATTLE TIGERS TO 0-0 TIE

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – For 110 minutes the Virginia Commonwealth and Princeton University women’s soccer time battled without either team scoring a goal as the Rams and Tigers fought to 0-0 tie at the Nike/Tribe Invitational hosted by the College of William & Mary.
The Black and Gold move to 3-2-2 on the season while the Tigers recorded their first tie of the season and move to 2-1-1 in 2006.
The Rams got their first scoring opportunity came during the 23rd minute as sophomore Megan Flanagan (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa) dribbled down the right side and blasted a shot from inside the box, but Princeton keeper Maren Dale came up with the save.
VCU got another chance in the 30th minute as Pernilla Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden/Danderyds Gym) took a feed from Laure Dupont (Plessis Robinson, France/Louis Bascan) and let loose a shot from 15 yards out that went wide right.
Jansson got another opportunity in the 63rd minute as she took a pass from Stephanie Power and let loose a shot that went just wide of the net. Senior Solveig Haaland (Drevvath, Norway/Mosjen Videregaende) just missed a header as she took a feed in the 75th minute.
The Black and Gold seemed to grab the momentum in the last fifteen minutes of regulation as junior Hayley Moorwood (Auckland, New Zealand/Avondale) had two near misses in the 80th and 84th minutes.
Junior goalkeeper Lauren Hardison (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) came up with the save of the contest as she leaped to deflect a free kick from Princeton’s Lauren Thomas with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime.
The Rams controlled the second overtime as they held Princeton without a shot while getting off five shots of their own. Jansson almost came away with a game winning goal as she took a pass of a header from Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/Dartmouth) and blast a shot just high of the net with less than ten seconds remaining in the contest.
Hardison records her third shutout of the season and pushes her shutout streak to 239:47 minutes as she has posted two consecutive shutouts.
The Black and Gold returns to the pitch on Sunday afternoon as it takes on the Wolfpack from North Carolina State University in a 3 p.m. contest at the Nike/Tribe Invitational at the College of William & Mary.
