WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior captain Hayley Moorwood (Auckland, New Zealand/Avondale) blasted a shot into the back of the net in the 69th minute to lead the Virginia Commonwealth women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over CAA-rival UNC Wilmington in the Rams conference opener on Friday evening.
The victory pushes the Black and Gold’s regular season conference unbeaten streak to 14 games, dating back to a 3-1 defeat at George Mason in 2004. The Rams improve to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the CAA, while the Seahawks fall to 5-3-0 and 0-1-0 in the CAA.
Moorwood collected a rebound off the cross bar from a shot off the foot of sophomore Megan Flanagan (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa) and got a shot past Seahawk keeper Jamie Balzarini for her team leading fourth goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Lauren Hardison (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) was outstanding once again between the pipes as she recorded three saves in route to her fourth shutout of the season. The standout netminder has allowed just two goals in her last six contests.
VCU held a slight advantage in shots, 9-7, as the two teams battled through a tightly contested match. The Rams grabbed the momentum in the second half as they outshot the Seahawks 6-1.
The Rams return to the pitch on Sunday as they wrap up their southern road trip with a 1 p.m. contest at Georgia State.
