RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Leigh Anthony (Fredericksburg, Va.) had four shots, but freshman Jillian Arnault’s goal in the 51st minute stood up as Virginia Commonwealth University dropped a 1-0 decision to Colgate Friday evening in the first round of the VCU/Ewing Sports Invitational at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.

In the day’s first match, Katie Hogwood scored in the 84th minute to snap a 1-1 tie and lead No. 25 William & Mary to a 2-1 win over La Salle.

VCU (2-2-1) had a 12-4 edge in shots, including 9-2 in the second half. The Rams had five shots on goal in the match, but junior keeper Brittany Pearsall saved all five. Two of Anthony’s four shots were on goal.

Arnault put the ball inside the right post just in front of the net on a pass from junior Franny Iacuzzi in the 51st minute to give Colgate (4-0-0) the lone goal of the match. It was Arnault’s second goal of the season.

Junior Lauren Hardison (Midlothian, Va.) registered one save for the Rams.

Junior Donna Mataya scored for William & Mary (4-1-0) with 24 seconds remaining in the first half. Sophomore Dana Giordano netted the equalizer for La Salle (1-4-0) in the 60th minute. Hogwood picked up a long cross and finished from close range in the 84th minute to give the Tribe the victory. Sophomore Meghan Walker had three saves for W&M, while sophomore Lauren Malizia registered six saves for the Explorers.

The second round of the VCU/Ewing Sports Invitational at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium will be on Sunday. William & Mary faces Colgate at 12 p.m., followed by VCU against La Salle at 3 p.m.
