YUFEROVA, KOSTIN HIGHLIGHT VCU’S CAA AWARD WINNERS
4-20-06

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore Marianna Yuferova (St. Petersburg, Russia) (pictured) captured Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Year honors, while Rams’ coach Paul Kostin was named league Coach of Year Friday at the conference’s annual awards banquet.

Yuferova, who was the CAA Rookie of the Year and an All-American in 2005, drew top honors along with Megan Moulton-Levy of William & Mary. This season Yuferova is 21-2 in singles play, earning her a No. 49 ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Yuferova is 19-1 in dual matches this spring. She is the first VCU player to win the award since Andrea Ondrisova in 2002.

Meanwhile, Kostin has led the Rams to a magical 2006 season. Picked 49 th in the ITA’s preseason poll, VCU has blasted its way to a perfect 24-0 record and a No. 14 ranking by the ITA. It is Kostin’s first CAA Coach of the Year award on the women’s side in his five seasons heading the program. He is 102-19 in those five years.

VCU sophomore Tatsiana Uvarova (Minsk, Belarus) is the third straight Ram to win CAA Rookie of the Year, sharing the distinction with Katarina Zoricic of William & Mary. Uvarova joins Yuferova in 2005 and Olga Borisova (Minsk, Belarus) in 2004 as previous VCU winners. Uvarova has opened her Black and Gold career 20-1 in singles, earning a No. 39 ranking, as well as 17-1 in doubles.

Yuferova and Uvarova were also both named All-CAA First Team in singles and doubles. Yuferova was joined by partner Borisova on the doubles side. Borisova and Yuferova have compiled a 20-4 doubles campaign, which has them ranked 16 th nationally. Uvarova was joined by doubles teammate Vera Petrashevitch ( St. Petersburg, Russia) on first team. Uvarova and Petrashevitch are 17-1 when paired together and are ranked 46 th by the ITA.

Borisova and her 20-2 record, as well as sophomore Viktoria Konstantinova ( Hanskovo, Bulgaria) also drew singles nods for first team, giving VCU four of the six possible spots.

Petrashevitch was also named to third team in singles play.

VCU puts its unblemished record on the line Friday, April 21 when the Rams clash with the winner of Thursday’s match between No. 8 Towson and No. 9 George Mason.
