RAMS FINISH EIGHTH AT CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

NEWARK, Del. – Junior Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) led the VCU women’s cross country team to an eighth place finish at CAA Championships on Friday afternoon in Newark, Del.

Williams placed 18th in the six-kilometer event as she clocked in with a time of 23:11.12. Senior Reagan Merriam (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) was the second finisher for the Black and Gold as the veteran runner finished 34th with a time of 23:57.04. Freshman Melissa Douglas (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) rounded out the top three for VCU with a time of 24:05.96.

William & Mary won the title for the fourth straight year with Georgia State following in second and James Madison rounding out the top three.

The Rams’ future looks bright as the Black and Gold only lose four seniors and return a stable of talented runners for next season.

RAMS FINISH FOURTH AT TRIBE OPEN

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach Va./Salem) finished 10th in the individual results to help Virginia Commonwealth University to a fourth-place finish at the Tribe Open.

Williams completed the 6K course in 24:12.8. Senior Reagan Merriam (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) was 13th in 24:47.6. Freshman Melissa Douglas was 16th in 24:52.9. Junior Libby Little (Spotsylvania, Va./Courtland) was 22nd in 25:30.4.

Host William & Mary won the team title with 16 points, 67 better than UMBC.

The Rams will compete in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship on Saturday, October 28, in Newark, Del.

RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) was the top finisher to help VCU win the 5k run at the McDonald's Maymont Cross Country Festival.

Williams completed the course in 19:18.74, more than one minute ahead of her nearest competitor. Senior Reagan Merriam (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) was third in 20:27.94.

Freshman Melissa Douglas was fifth in 20:38.71. Junior Libby Little (Spotsylvania, Va./Massaponax) was sixth in 20:44.09.

The Rams will compete in the Greensboro Invitational this Saturday, Oct. 7, in Greensboro, N.C.

WILLIAMS LEADS WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY AT SALTY SEADOG INVITATIONAL

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Class of 2009 had a strong showing this weekend for the women’s cross country team as a pair of sophomores Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) and Libby Little (Spotsylvania, Va./Courtland) finished in the top 35 at the Salty Seadog Invitational, hosted by the United States Naval Academy. The Rams finished seventh as a team at the event.

Williams led the stable of runners as the sensational sophomore finished in the top 25 with a time of 24:42.62 over the six-kilometer course. Little finished in 33rd place as she clocked in at 24:57.17.

The Rams return to the paths in two weeks as they participate in the Maymont Cross Country Festival in Richmond. The race is set to begin at 4:30 on September 29th.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY RANKED SIXTH IN CAA PRESEASON POLL; WOMEN NINTH

RICHMOND, Va.- With a roster loaded with returning lettermen and a talented batch of freshman runners, the men’s cross country team will look to make a splash in the CAA this upcoming fall. The squad was recently ranked fifth in the CAA preseason poll, but will look to improve upon that ranking at the conference championships later this fall.

The Rams will be led by a strong group of veterans as junior Steve Walters (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run) returns after earning All-CAA honors at the CAA Championships last fall. Walters will be joined by senior Cary Chaffee (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) as they look to guide a talented stable of young runners back to top of the CAA.

The Black and Gold finished sixth behind six-time defending champion, William and Mary, who received the top spot in the preseason poll along with Georgia State and James Madison, who tied for second place. Delaware and George Mason finished fourth and fifth, respectively as Hofstra, Northeastern and UNC Wilmington rounded out the nine team poll.

The women’s squad finished ninth in the women’s cross country CAA preseason poll. Junior Danielle Williams(Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) and sophomore Samantha Hendel (Rockville Center, N.Y./Oceanside) return as the Rams’ first and third place finisher at CAA championship last fall as the duo look to lead the Black and Gold this fall.

VCU PLACES NINTH AT UVA’S LOU ONESTY INVITE

EARLYSVILLE, Va. – Junior Regan Merriam (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) finished 66 th in 20:34.1 to pace Virginia Commonwealth University, which was ninth at the University of Virginia’s Lou Onesty Invitational Saturday at Panorama Farms.

Also for the Rams, sophomores Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) and Libby Little (Spotsylvania, Va./Courtland) were 74 th in 21:08.5 and 76 th in 21:12.9, respectively.

The Black and Gold return to the trails on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. at 10 a.m.

RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Reagan Merriam (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) was the top finisher for the Rams as the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s cross country team finished third in the University of Richmond’s Alumni Open.

The host Spiders claimed first place with 15 points. Longwood came in second with 60 points, followed closely by VCU with 65 points in its first meet of the fall.

Merriam completed the two-mile course in 12:28.69. Junior Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) was VCU’s second finisher in 12:48.06, followed closely by junior Libby Little (Spotsylvania, Va./Courtland) in 12:51.91. Senior Evan Bisharat (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) was fourth for the Rams with a time of 13:50.54. Sophomore Maria Anthony (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) was VCU’s final scorer in 14:05.82.

The Rams will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the University of Virginia’s Lou Onesty Invitational in Charlottesville.

WILMINGTON, N.C.- The Virginia Commonwealth women’s cross country team placed 9th overall at the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association cross country championships. William & Mary won the meet with 35 points and James Madison received second place honors with 46 points.

Leading the Rams was sophomore Danielle Williams(Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) (pictured), who finished 30thwith a time of 23:39.78.  She was followed by Emily Thompson (Crozet, Va./Western Albermarle) who finished 36th with a time of 23:53.03; and Samantha Hendel (Rockville Center, N.Y./Oceanside) who was the 57th runner to complete the 6000-meter course on UNC Wilmington’s campus.

RAMS HEAD TO CAAs

Richmond, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University men’s and women’s cross country teams will head to Wilmington, N.C. this Saturday for the Colonial Athletic Association championships.  The men, who will run eight kilometers, have a start time of 10 a.m., while the women are set to run 6 kilometers and begin at 11 a.m.  An awards ceremony will follow the meet at approximately noon. 

Sophomore Steve Walters (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run) holds the fastest time of the season for the men at 24:43.20, while senior Emily Thompson (Crozet, Va./Western Albermarle) leads the women with a time of 23:07.17.  In 2004, the men finished third out of seven teams, while the women finished third out of eight.

The NCAA Southeast Regional cross county meet will be held Saturday, November 12, in Greenville, N.C.



THOMPSON LEADS RAMS TO SECOND PLACE FINISH AT TRIBE OPEN

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.- Senior Emily Thompson (Crozet, Va./ Western Albermarle) led the VCU women’s cross country team to a second place finish at the Tribe Open hosted by William and Mary.  A total of 57 runners from five teams participated in the 6k event. 

Thompson paved the way for the Rams with her 10th place finish, crossing the line at 23:07.17.  Two other Rams, sophomores Danielle Williams(Virginia Beach, Va./ Salem) and Libby Little(Spotsylvania, Va./ Courtland) finished among the top 20 runners on the Eastern State Hospital course.  Williams finished 12th at 23:13.24 and Little’s time of 24:01.64 was good enough for 19th place. 

Samantha Hendel (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside), Katie Whitehead (Piney River, Va./Nelson County), Sarah Saxton (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun NE) and Evan Dove (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) rounded out the top 30 for the event. 

The VCU women’s cross country team will return to action on Oct. 29 when they travel to Wilmington, NC for the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championship.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY FINISHES FOURTH AT GEORGE MASON INVITATIONAL

FAIRFAX, Va.- The Virginia Commonwealth women’s cross country team  claimed a fourth place finish at the George Mason Cross Country Invitational hosted by George Mason University.

The Rams shared the Bull Run course with runners from American, University of Albany, Hampton, VCU, Howard, James Madison, Norfolk, Longwood, and host George Mason.  Sophomore Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) was the first Ram to complete the 4k event.  Williams’ time of 15:29.68 was good enough to receive a 14th place finish.

Three other Rams also finished in the top-25.  Senior Emily Thompson (Crozet, Va./ Western Albermarle) finished 15th. Sophomore Libby Little (Spotsylvania, Va./Courtland) finished 18th and Evan Dove(Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) received a 24th-place finish. 

VCU women’s cross country action will resume on Oct. 15 when the Rams travel to Williamsburg, Va. for the Tribe Open.
